Notes for A
RCHIBALD MIRK ALEXANDER:
1. Doing some random roaming through blogging sites about genealogy, I found a site that listed ship passengers coming to Canada in 1908 to 1910, transcribed recently by a FHS in Nanaimo, BC. Having checked these lists in the past to no avail, I was not hopeful this time that there would be any useful information. Was I ever wrong!
The first name I found after searching the alphabetical listings was Archie Alexander, age 31 from England coming to Canada arriving 12 August 1909 on the Victorian. The name and age were right and the date of 1909 matched what my Dad had said. The full records are available in Ottawa in the National Archives. Searching through a few pages, there were no other matches for Alexanders that I recognized making that voyage in that ship.
Next discovery, Mary Alexander, and infant son John Alexander, arrived in a Quebec port on the Laurentic on 29 October 1909. The ages matched and I believe I have found the records for the arrival in Canada of my father's family, my grandparents and Uncle Johnnie. Grandpa must have come first to find a place for his family to stay.
While I was on the site, I decided to check out Grandma's family, the Baileys. There on the same boat, the Laurentic arriving October 1909, were Eliza and Joseph Bailey, my great-grandparents both 59, and their son (and Mary's brother) Joseph 30. All ages matched. I had heard that the voyage was difficult but I had no idea that the families had come together. Ephraim, the youngest brother, arrived on the Empress of Britain earlier in August 1909. Some of the others seem to be possible relatives to be checked later but it is time to acquire the ships papers and the passenger lists with more information on them. What an exciting find!
Archibald served in the Boar War (discharge documents) in the Cheshire Regiment and moved to John Street Stalybridge on discharge. He worked as a calico printer and married Mary Bailey in 1907 in Stalybridge. They moved to Sheffield where Archie was a ticket collector for the London Railroad and where John was born.
2. Archibald Mirk Alexander, the second son of George Alexander and Ellen Mirk, was born in Holborn, St. Lukes, a poor part of London, on August 5, 1878. His parents had moved south from Scotland and his father was working in London as a joiner or a carpenter. The family lived at 13 Nelson Street with four other families. The family story is that George was injured in a construction accident that the family moved north in England to Stalybridge or Ashton-under-Lyne where three of Ellen's sisters were living with their families. George died of a form of tuberculous us May 16, 1883, and the 1891census records show Ellen living in Stalybridge with three young children working as a washer woman. Although Archie was only twelve and his brother George 14, they were working as labourers in the printworks.
He doesn't appear on the 1901 census because he was in South Africa fighting for Britain during the Boer War. Archibald returned to the Stalybridge area and worked in the textile industry. December 29, 1907, in St. Pauls Church, Stalybridge, he married Mary Bailey. They moved to Sheffield where John was born. Archibald worked for the railroad as a ticket collector and the young family saved every shilling and at the end of a year had saved only 5 pounds.
The family decided to come to Canada and Archie Alexander, age 31 from England is found on the passenger list coming to Canada arriving 12 August 1909 on the Victorian, an ocean steam ship built and operated by the Allan Line. There no other matches for Alexanders that I recognized making that voyage in that ship. Mary Alexander, and infant son John Alexander, arrived in a Quebec port on the Laurentic on 29 October 1909 and on the same boat, the Laurentic arriving October 1909, were Eliza and Joseph Bailey, my great-grandparents both 59, and their son (and Mary's brother) Joseph 30. All ages matched. I had heard that the voyage was difficult but I had no idea that the families had come together. Ephraim, the youngest brother, had arrived on the Empress of Britain earlier in August 1909.

ARY SIME ALEXANDER:
Anna Sepp is on the 1910 census as a daughter of William and Mary. I doubt that this is actually the case as her mother is given as born in PA whiule Mary was born in Scotland and is listed as Scottish born for each of the other children and Anna is not on OWT as a daughter or with the family in 1920.
As a young girl in Scotland she used to make clothing for the infants of the castle. I have a christening dress that she made for my sister. In America she had to raise the 8 children on her own when her husband died at a young age. She used to sit in her rocking chair and sing and play her guitar. She sang gospel songs. Amazing Grrace and Rock of Ages were her favorites as my mother told me. from Pollock Family tree on Ancestry.com

Hospital, Health Sciences Centre. He had a full, independent and healthy life up to the last few months of his 90 years. He was our special Uncle Bill to his many family members, Dorothy and Don Minaker, their three children, Natasha, Wade and Robin; Dick and Pat Alexander; Julie and Jeff Stephenson, their two daughters, Jamie and Jennifer. Bill was an extremely wise and gentle man. He had limitless patience and taught us all to enjoy the simple things in life. He was famous for saying "Take it easy". Bill was a lifetime resident of St. James and lived most of his life on Ferry Road. Many things in that home are a statement to his carpentry skills. He worked all his life at the family business, The Alexander and Bailey Tire Store (A & B). Bill served time at Shilo in the Second World War. In his retirement years he enjoyed his woodworking, golfing, coffee at the Sals and many trips in the van. He shared most of his years with his brother Jack and his three children. In his later years, the St. James Legion became an important part of meeting friends like Hughie Mushrow and Artie Bourke. We have so many wonderful memories of Bill, he will never leave us. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Rehab. Hospital, 4th and 5th floor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rehab. Hospital, Health Sciences Centre. Cremation will take place and a private family ceremony will follow.
